Charity of the week
Nearly 2 billion people around the world lack access to safe water, which causes more than 840,000 deaths from water-related diseases each year. Established in 1991, Water for People (waterforpeople.org) promotes safe drinking water and sanitation for communities in developing countries around the world. Unlike many nonprofit organizations, Water for People never fully funds a development project, but instead empowers local governments and community members to co-invest in long-term solutions together. Once a project is introduced, Water for People puts in place a 10-year plan to monitor results and ensure that communities continue to receive clean water despite any problems that may occur. Since the organization’s founding, it has brought clean water to more than 4 million people across nine countries.
