Advance prep for allergy season
Tip of the week...
▪ Ready your fortress. When pollen counts spike, you’ll want your home to be a refuge of allergen-free air, so seal any gaps where pollen might enter and purchase a HEPAfilter air cleaner. Also, get used to cleaning with a wet mop and microfiber cloth, both of which can pick up dust without using synthetic cleaners, which can be irritants, too.
▪ Avoid unhealth y foods. Because an allergy is “essentially the immune system overreacting to a trigger,” you need to treat your immune system right. Most of the immune system is in your gut, so avoid inflammatory foods like dairy, wheat, and sugar.
▪ Eat to win. The list of helpful foods is long, but starts with onions, apples, and cabbage, all of which contain a potent flavonoid. Bitter vegetables such as arugula and asparagus help the immune system by detoxifying the liver. Vitamin C is an antihistamine, so load up on berries, citrus fruits, and leafy greens.
