Charity of the week
Nearly 40_percent of all elementary school–age children around the world lack basic reading, writing, and mathematical skills. The San Francisco–based nonprofit Room to Read (roomtoread.org) is working to transform the lives of those 250_million children and their communities by investing in literacy programs and efforts to improve gender equality in education throughout the developing world. Founded in 2000 to help children in Nepal, the charity now works in 10 countries across Africa and Asia, where it builds libraries and schools, supports reading and writing instruction, and publishes children’s books in local languages. Some 10_million children have benefited from Room to Read’s programs, and the charity has distributed more than 18_million books to schools and libraries.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
