Charity of the week
Primary immunodeficiency (PI) affects 1 in 500 people and causes children and adults to have recurring, hard-to-cure infections. It can also be difficult to diagnose, with many parents in the dark about their child’s condition. When Vicki and Fred Modell lost their son Jeffrey because of complications associated with PI, they created the Jeffrey Modell Foundation (info4pi.org) to create a community for PI families, fund medical research, and spur awareness about the importance of early diagnosis. Since 1987, the organization has funded 125 research centers at academic teaching hospitals in 84 countries around the globe. A partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has led to a 10-fold increase in the number of patients identified, diagnosed, and treated.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
