How to get cheaper car rentals
Tip of the week...
▪ Check lesser-known sites. Don’t book through rental companies’ websites if price is a priority. Among aggregators,CostcoTravel.com and Autoslash.com often offer the best deals, while low Hertz prices are available for AAA members through AAA.com. If you can handle not knowing which rental company is providing the car, sites like Priceline.com and Hotwire.com are also worth a look.
▪ Avoid insurance add-ons. Your credit card, personal car insurance, or travel insurance may cover a rental vehicle, but read the policies’ fine print in advance of renting and bring proof of coverage. Another option is to buy a stand-alone policy from sites like InsureMyRentalCar.com, which offer rates far lower than the rental companies’.
▪ Watch out for fees. Root out daily fees for unnecessary extras like a GPS unit or toll transponder. Also avoid airport rentals, which come loaded with extra taxes and fees.
