Charity of the week
In the U.S., more than 15 million children from low-income families have no books in their home. The mission of Book Trust (booktrust.org) is to increase literacy skills and foster a love for learning by ensuring that students in poverty are able to own books of their choice. Each month, Book Trust provides new books chosen by individual students at participating elementary schools. Teachers pass out Scholastic Order Flyers to their class and assist students in choosing books that appeal to them; every student is eligible for $7 worth of books each month. Since its founding in 2001, Book Trust has helped double the number of participating students reading at grade level. This year, the organization will deliver 1.6 million books to 53,000 students in 22 states.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
