■ Oregon officials refunded a $500 fine and admitted they violated the free speech rights of a resident who showed their red-light cameras were poorly timed. Mats Järlström, an engineer, was originally penalized by the state for “unlicensed practice of engineering” after he publicized his analysis of traffic-light patterns to help his wife fight a traffic ticket. After a four-year legal battle, state officials admitted they were wrong to attempt to silence him.
■ With California facing more frequent wildfires, state officials are encouraging prison inmates to volunteer as firefighters. Inmates already make up a third of California’s 10,000 firefighters, and officials are trying to educate more inmates about the “many advantages” of the dangerous work. “You’re more out in the open,” explained a spokesman.
