Charity of the week
In the U.S., low-income students are less likely to attend college, and only 14 percent receive a bachelor’s degree or higher within eight years of graduating from high school. Let’s Get Ready (letsgetready.org) aims to close the achievement gap by helping low-income and first-generation-to-college students get admitted to and graduate from university. High school juniors and seniors can enroll in the organization’s free college-prep program—a nine-week curriculum where they receive intensive SAT preparation, assistance with college applications, and post-enrollment mentorship. Let’s Get Ready helps nearly 10,000 students in the Northeast enroll in college every year, and participants’ college graduation rate is five times higher than the national rate for students of similar economic backgrounds.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
