How to give a new gadget a long life
Tip of the week…
▪ Go easy on charging: Don’t just leave a phone, tablet, or laptop plugged in. “Short and shallow” charging—say from 50 to 85 percent— extends a lithium-ion battery’s life. Don’t routinely discharge past 20 percent.
▪ Install up dates: Software updates cover a host of bug fixes and security improvements. Especially for a device’s first few years, “you should absolutely install updates as soon as they come down the pipe.”
▪ Free up space: A shortage of storage space degrades performance, because software will struggle to find places to store new data. Cloud services can help, and most operating systems now have built-in space-saving tools.
▪ Keep it clean: Grime can hinder performance and longevity more than you’d think, particularly with laptops. “Often, a lint-free cloth, alcohol or distilled water, and a can of compressed air are all the tools you need.”
