We need President Kelly
White House Chief of Staff John Kelly has infuriated the president by confirming what everybody already knew, said Kevin Williamson. “Donald Trump runs a Twitter account. President John Kelly is running the administration.” Last week, Kelly publicly called Trump’s campaign promises on immigration “uninformed,” and took credit for convincing him it was not possible or desirable to build a 2,000-mile-long border wall or deport 11 million illegal immigrants. That sparked a series of passive-aggressive tweets in which a petulant Trump insisted “The Wall is The Wall” and that his immigration positions have not “evolved”—so there. The truth is that while Trump fancies himself an “alpha male” and “tough guy,” he’s soft and spoiled—“a rich kid from New York City” used to getting his way. Kelly really is tough—a career Marine who rose to the rank of general and commanded forces in Iraq. He’s everything Trump—who dodged the Vietnam War draft by claiming “heel spurs”—wishes he could be. Since Kelly took over running the White House, he’s instilled some discipline and order amid the chaos—reportedly threatening to quit several times if Trump didn’t bend to his rules. Now that there’s friction between the minder and the man-child, let’s hope their arrangement lasts. The country needs President Kelly.
