Hotel of the week
A regal former Christian Science church in Adams Morgan has found new life as a hipster cathedral, said Andrea Sachs in The Washington Post. Built in 1912, the neoclassical structure now houses a buzzing multipurpose hotel lobby that includes a coffee nook, a podcast-recording studio, a restaurant, and a bar that serves a cocktail called “I’ve Done Some Dastardly Things.” Remnants of the building’s past pop up here and there: Hymnal boards hang in the hallways and milk-glass windows still diffuse sunlight “like a squeeze bottle of golden honey.”

With its relaxed atmosphere and clear blue waters, Catalina is like a Greek island off the coast of California, said Doug Hansen in The San Diego Union-Tribune. Just an hour’s ferry ride from Los Angeles, the 22-mile-long island has a magic that’s apparent from the moment the boat approaches the main town, Avalon, through a harbor “alive with all kinds of boats and the sound of kids yelling as they jump into the water.” You should spend at least three days on Catalina, 88 percent of which is a protected nature reserve. The physically daring can try Catalina Aerial Adventure, an outdoor park where visitors can climb, swing, and zip-line high up in the trees of a eucalyptus forest. My wife and I prefer to lounge in a private cabana at the Descanso Beach Club, or under a thatched-roof palapa on Two Harbors’ beach. “There’s nothing better than being served hot food and cold drinks in a shady refuge before going swimming and snorkeling.”
