Charity of the week
Many communities in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico are still struggling to return to normalcy after being devastated by hurricanes last fall. All Hands and Hearts—Smart Response (allhandsandhearts.org) has made a two-year commitment to rebuild homes and schools in the hardest-hit areas. The organization, formed in 2017 through a merger of All Hands Volunteers and the Happy Heart Fund, makes a point of listening to local communities affected by natural disasters to hear what they need most. Besides providing immediate relief, volunteers construct disaster-resilient buildings and implement special projects, such as financial literacy classes in Peru. Since 2005, the organization’s 45,550-strong volunteer base has helped more than a million people, providing everything from tutoring in the Philippines to kids’ movie nights in Malawi.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
