What the critics say
The 2019 Corolla Hatchback
Kelley Blue Book
“A small car with a rear hatch and a little attitude can be immensely appealing.” Toyota is proving that with the all-new Corolla Hatchback—which replaces the little-loved Corolla iM, rides on a stiffer frame, packs more power, and “visually more than holds its own with any other hatch in the arena.” Loaded with safety and comfort features, it also offers an impressively quiet ride and can haul more cargo than a midsize sedan.
Car & Driver
“There’s potential in this car that remains potential.” With its 168 hp engine, the Hatchback is “barely powerful enough to be entertaining,” even with two innovative transmissions. A performance model would be welcome. Still, this is a composed small car, with “exceptionally clean” interior styling and an exterior profile that conveys a welcome eagerness. “Exciting? Let’s not go that far.”
The Boston Globe
“Think of the Corolla Hatchback as ‘hot hatch light.’” It has hot-hatch style and handling, but, thankfully, “not the rough ride that usually comes as part of the package.” It’s a shame that only a fraction of buyers will choose the sweet-shifting, six-speed manual gearbox, because it makes winding roads such fun, “you’ll find yourself avoiding the straightaways every chance you get.” ■
