Yet another flag debate
If the goal was to highlight how divided our country is, Untitled (Flag 2) was a major success, said Sarah Cascone in Artnet.com. Last week, liberals and conservatives were galled for different reasons when the University of Kansas pulled down the work, an altered American flag created by a New York artist. The school was responding to complaints from the state’s Republican governor and others that the flag had been desecrated by splattered black ink, and the critics weren’t satisfied when the piece was put on display inside a campus museum. Others cried censorship. The decision, said The Kansas City Star, “reflects a betrayal of the university’s mission to promote learning.” Josephine Meckseper, who created the flag for a national art project, claims that hers comments on current affairs because its ink splotch resembles the continental U.S. and has been rent in two. The flag is currently hanging in 12 other locations throughout the country.
