Charity of the week
Oral history project The HistoryMakers (thehistorymakers.org) collects the stories of African-Americans who have shaped life in the United States. Researchers interview African-Americans of notable accomplishment, some famous and others less well known. Carrying on the oral history tradition of the WPA’s groundbreaking Slave Narrative Project of the 1930s, The HistoryMakers creates a record of African-American history through first-person recollections. The organization stages frequent events featuring key figures in African-American history and tells their stories through educational programs and An Evening With… specials on PBS. The charity currently has 2,000 videos and 7,000 hours of testimony, and is on its way to reaching its goal of collecting 5,000 recorded first-person narratives.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
