Robert Redford announced his upcoming movie will likely be his last, ending an iconic acting career spanning six decades. “I’ve been doing it since I was 21,” Redford, 82, told Entertainment Weekly. “I thought, ‘Well, that’s enough.’” Redford says the decision was inspired partly by his role in The Old Man & the Gun, due out next month, in which he stars as a lifelong bank robber pursuing a final string of heists. “Why not go out with something that’s very upbeat and positive?” he said. Redford made his film debut in 1960 and became an A-lister nine years later with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Two years ago he predicted his retirement, saying, “I’m getting tired of acting.”
Russia has cast Steven Seagal to serve as a “special representative” tasked with improving U.S.-Russia relations. Famous for beating up villains in 1990s action movies, the American-born Seagal, 66, is close with another martial artist, Russian President Vladimir Putin, who personally awarded Seagal Russian citizenship in 2016. Seagal has defended Russia’s annexation of Crimea, insisted that Russia did not interfere in the 2016 presidential election, and called Putin “a great world leader.” As special envoy to the U.S., Seagal will seek to promote “cooperation in culture, arts, public and youth exchanges” between the two countries, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced. “I take this honor very seriously,” Seagal said.
Former White House communications director Hope Hicks appears to have rekindled a romance with Rob Porter, who was forced to resign as White House staff secretary after his two ex-wives accused him of domestic violence. Hicks, 29, was dating Porter, 40, in February when news broke of his alleged abuses. Their relationship is now back on track, according to the New York Post, with one source saying, “Hope appears to be pretty smitten with Rob.” The White House drew heavy criticism for standing by Porter when he was denied a security clearance by the FBI, which discovered that his first wife accused him of choking and punching her and that his second wife said he’d dragged her out of a shower naked. Hicks left the White House a month later, though she remains in contact with President Trump and flew with him to a rally in Ohio last week.
