Only in America
A Bernie Sanders supporter who carried an American flag to protest a far-right demonstration in Portland, Ore., was beaten up by far-left Antifa protesters who decided he was a fascist. Paul Welch, 38, says he carried the flag to “take it back” from right-wing nationalists. But two black-masked Antifa rioters told him the flag was a “fascist symbol” and struck him on the back of the head with a club.
A New York couple was barred from New York’s Statue of Liberty for wearing “Abolish ICE” T-shirts. Tiffany Huang says she and her fiancé wore the shirts to protest President Trump’s family-separation policy, but security guards refused to let them in unless they removed the shirts. A National Park Service spokesman has apologized, saying, “This never should have happened.”
Boring but important
New threats to think tanks, DNC
Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit said it detected Russia-backed hacking operations targeting conservative think tanks that have been critical of President Trump and Russia. The hackers were directed by Russian military intelligence, which hacked the Democratic National Committee ahead of the 2016 elections. This time, hackers created fake websites meant to imitate those of the Hudson Institute, a conservative think tank, and the International Republican Institute. There was also a phony site for the U.S. Senate. Visitors to the fake sites were vulnerable to malware, though Microsoft did not find evidence that malicious software had actually been installed. This week, the DNC reported that unknown hackers had tried to penetrate its voter database.
