Hotel of the week
The Cavalier Hotel
Virginia Beach, Va.
You would never guess that the Cavalier was almost demolished a few years ago, said John Oseid in Forbes.com. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the neoclassical oceanfront landmark is “back in a big way” after an $85 million renovation. “It’s remarkable how much of the Y-shaped brick structure looks exactly the same as it did in 1927.” You can swim in the same pool F. Scott Fitzgerald enjoyed and wonder if Richard Nixon truly used a lobby fireplace to burn evidence. The guest rooms are much bigger than back then, though, and there’s now an on-site distillery.
