Best apps and sites…
For medical advice you can trust
FamilyDoctor.org can’t replace a visit to your physician, but it’s “a far better option than Dr. Google.” Backed by the American Academy of Family Physicians, the site has a Symptom Checker that asks yes-or-no questions to narrow down potential causes, then offers cautious treatment advice.
KidsDoc, a $2 app developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, offers a similar diagnostic service, but focused on children.
Ada, created by an independent startup, “uses artificial intelligence to spot patterns in your symptoms that you might overlook.” The app provides “clear, considered” advice based on a database of 1,500 conditions.
MedlinePlus.com offers general health advice plus in-depth information on specific diseases and disorders. Co-run by the National Institutes of Health, the site can be “invaluable” if you already have a diagnosis and just need more information.
