Charity of the week
In the U.S., mental health disorders are the most common health issue affecting children under 18. The Child Mind Institute (childmind.org) works to tackle this epidemic by providing specialized treatments and advancing research on brain science. Recent studies from the institute have addressed contemporary teen issues, from vaping to the anxieties of social media. Its school psychologists provide diagnostic evaluation of students as well as training for educators; its intervention programs have measurably reduced depression and PTSD among the children it serves. The institute also works on the biology of brain development, and is currently leading an initiative to create a database of imaging and clinical data from 10,000 young people to help identify biological markers of mental illness.
