For reducing food waste
FoodKeeper makes it easy to look up the shelf life of foods, in case you’re unsure how long that corned beef will last in the freezer. Created by the USDA, the app also has a calendar function that can provide alerts.
NoWaste creates an inventory of the contents of your fridge, freezer, and pantry so expiration dates never slip by. You can also use the iOS-only app to set reminders, plan meals, and create shopping lists.
Olio is a food-sharing network where users list unwanted food that neighbors might need. “It could be vegetables, a sandwich, or even a single cupcake. Hopefully, people near you will see it and arrange a pickup.”
Food for All connects users with restaurants that want to off-load unsold meals for as little as $3. You pay through the app and pick the meal up before closing time. Only restaurants in New York and Boston have signed up so far, but “it’s a good start.”
