College presidents are raking in more money than ever. In 2016, 61 private-college heads earned more than $1 million. The top earner was Kenneth Starr from Baylor University: Thanks to the severance package he got after the school mishandled sexual assault allegations, he left with $4.9 million. Columbia University’s Lee Bollinger was second with $3.9 million. The average private-school president earned $560,000.
GOP members of Congress brought up climate change 215 times in 2018, compared with 5,360 mentions by Democrats. In 2013, in a less polarized Congress, Democrats spoke about it roughly 1,000 times versus about 300 Republican mentions.
A study of the 350 top-grossing films released from 2014 to 2017 shows films with female leads outperformed those in which men got top billing. The 105 films headlined by women led in every budget category. Of movies with production budgets over $100 million, female-led films earned an average of $586 million, $72 million more than their male-led counterparts.
By the end of 2018, 51.2 percent of the world’s population—3.9 billion people—will be online. Mobile connections have skyrocketed, too, with 96 percent of the world’s population now within reach of a cell network.
There are more than 30,000 dollar stores across the country, up from 18,000 a decade ago. Dollar stores, led by the chains Dollar General and Dollar Tree, have sold $24 billion worth of groceries in nine months, compared with Whole Foods at $15 billion.
