The art that rankled Ivanka
Someone has finally goaded Ivanka Trump into acting like her father, said Philip Kennicott in The Washington Post. The president’s daughter last week posted an “uncharacteristically prickly” comment on Twitter that called attention to a mocking performance-art piece. In Jennifer Rubell’s Ivanka Vacuuming, mounted at Washington, D.C.’s Flashpoint Gallery, an Ivanka look-alike in heels and a fixed smile endlessly vacuums a carpet while viewers toss crumbs at her. The real first daughter apparently objected. “Women can choose to knock each other down or build each other up,” she tweeted. “I choose the latter.” And maybe she’s has a point, said Sarah Rose Sharp in Hyperallergic.com. The “really disturbing” thing about Ivanka Vacuuming is this: It treats household cleaning as belittling labor and invites gallery visitors to take glee in forcing a woman to perform it.
