Tip of the week…
What to pounce on at Goodwill
Sterling silverware sometimes hides among the everyday flatware. It may be tarnished, of course. To test it, tap it against something and listen for a ringing sound.
Ornate picture frames are often worth more than the art they hold. Most elaborate, antique-looking frames sell well online.
Vintage luggage is hip these days, and though unnoticed Louis Vuitton trunks are rare, “lesser-known brands still go for big bucks when they come in matched groups.”
Jadeite is a mint-colored mineral that was used last century in the manufacture of dishware, lamps, and other household items. McKee, Jeannette, and Fire King are the brands to remember: “A single butter dish could be worth upward of $100.”
Colored Pyrex is prized, too, “especially in bright hues and unusual patterns.” The tempered glassware is so sturdy that even collectors use it for cooking.
