Charity of the week
Founded in 1997, Women of Tomorrow Mentor and Scholarship Program (womenoftomorrow.org) empowers at-risk girls by providing the mentorship, professional opportunities, college financial aid, and group support they need to succeed. In partnership with high schools in Philadelphia, Detroit, and Florida, WOT places groups of five teenagers under the mentorship of a successful professional woman. Through meet-ups, college campus visits, and career-focused field trips, the program has been proved to encourage the girls’ level of self-esteem and increase their GPA; of the teenagers in the program, 94 percent receive high school diplomas. Since its inception, WOT has helped 15,000 at-risk girls, is active in nearly 200 public schools, and has awarded $6.4 million in scholarships.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
