Charity of the week
In the early years when children develop critical cognitive, emotional, and social skills, traditional school programs rely heavily on vision. Visually Impaired Preschool Services (vips.org) helps young children in Kentucky and Indiana overcome vision loss, offering them programs tailored to the needs of blind/low-vision children that prepare them to successfully navigate the world. VIPS provides home visits to give parents tools for vision-loss training, and helps their children transition from home to a typical school environment. In addition, VIPS operates a nationally accredited preschool in Louisville, where certified teachers, mobility specialists, and music and occupational therapists help children with their development. VIPS is the only nonprofit providing vision services to children under 5 in Kentucky and Indiana.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
