Tip of the week
How to choose a vacation rental
Look for premium badges. Airbnb recently added a “plus” designation for exceptional properties—rated highly by users and meeting inspectors’ standards for comfortable beds, quality linens, design, and Wi-Fi speed. HomeAway and VRBO’s “premier partner” badge is a similar seal of approval.
Beware euphemisms. “Quaint” can mean run-down, “rustic” can mean isolated, and “cozy” can mean cramped. If you see the latter, double-check the square footage.
Second-guess the photos. High-dynamic-range images flatter dingy rooms, and wide-angle images make a space appear bigger.
Scan the reviews. Seeing nothing but positive reviews can be a red flag. Look for generally positive ratings and, importantly, polite responses to complaints.
Scout the area. Use the Street View option in Google Maps to tour the neighborhood, and type the address into CrimeReports.com. Source: The Washington Post
