Charity of the week
In our politically divisive climate, StoryCorps (storycorps.org) aims to build bridges by preserving and sharing stories that bring compassion, hope, and understanding to people’s unique and shared experiences. StoryCorps began as a simple story booth in 2003, pairing two participants at a time to share stories about their lives. It has since evolved into the most extensive oral history project documenting American lives and the American experience. StoryCorps has done series on topics such as parenthood, 9/11, LGBT people in America, love, and mass incarceration. Podcasts are aired on national platforms such as NPR and stored in the Library of Congress. Story Corps received a news and documentary Emmy in 2016.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
