Charity of the week
The Cara Program (carachicago.org) helps families in Chicago break the cycle of poverty by providing a complete five-step mentoring program that brings the unemployed into the workforce. First, the organization recruits low-income individuals through outreach and referrals. Then, Cara teaches them workplace skills. Individuals apply the skills they learn at short-term jobs, in areas from landscaping to administrative support. After the training is complete, the charity connects trainees with companies that offer good wages and benefits, providing a transportation card and a suit for the job interview. Cara will further guide them through the first year to ensure job retention and advancement. Since 1991, the charity has helped more than 6,500 people find jobs.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
