Charity of the week
The Hunger Project (thp.org) aims to develop healthy communities in Africa, South Asia, and Latin America by training local leaders, primarily women, to meet the community’s basic needs. THP works with clusters of villages to end hunger, provide clean water, and improve maternal health for groups of 5,000 to 15,000 villagers. THP provides microfinancing for women to generate their own income and to implement these projects, prioritizing small loans that allow poor applicants to pay expenses on farms or start other businesses. Through programs in Africa, more than 100 villages have mobilized to create classrooms, nurse’s stations, and food banks. In South Asia, THP helps volunteer youth leaders organize village campaigns against child marriage and violence against women.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
