The Department of Health and Human Services says it is ending an Obama-era rule prohibiting organizations receiving federal grants from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation and gender. The rule change, affecting organizations collectively receiving about $500 billion annually in grant money, will enable any faith-based organization to refuse to hire gay or transgender people or to work with people who don’t share its religion.

The number of Americans who donated to charity fell from 66 percent in 2000 to 53 percent in 2016. Researchers attributed that sharp drop, which became much steeper after the Great Recession in 2008, to economic insecurity and declining affiliation with organized religion.

Nearly 40 percent of American farm income in 2019 will come from the federal government. Farmers will collect $33 billion in aid, including payments to offset China’s retaliatory tariffs in the ongoing trade war. The farm bailout will cost more than double the 2009 auto bailout.

President Trump’s reelection campaign has held at least 15 contests offering supporters the chance to win “VIP travel” and “an epic meal” with Trump in exchange for a donation. But the campaign hasn’t announced any winners, and wouldn’t respond to requests to prove the meals had occurred.
