Getting the flavor of…
A new day in Tampa
I’ve really underestimated my hometown, Tampa, said Paul Abercrombie in The Washington Post. “This once sleepy city is experiencing a real renaissance,” especially along its waterfront, a focus of investment by companies owned by Bill Gates and a local hedge-fund titan. To see the city anew, I recently booked my family a weekend stay downtown. From the balcony of our hotel in the Water Street Tampa neighborhood, we watched as parades of paddleboards and pontoons turned the once polluted Hillsborough River into “a Dr. Seuss book come to life.” We rode a streetcar to Sparkman Wharf, now a park-like space with a mix of eateries housed in colorful shipping containers. Catching a Pirate Water Taxi, we enjoyed the pirate captain’s comments about the passing landmarks as we headed to Ulele, our favorite restaurant-brewery. Later that night, while walking the riverfront with all of Tampa, we might have been somewhere in Italy.
