Charity of the week
Two years after Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake has hit the U.S. territory, leaving the island in shambles again. Direct Relief’s (directrelief.org) Puerto Rican Medical Reserve Corps team of doctors, nurses, counselors, and volunteers works in the island’s most affected areas to deliver medical supplies, treat medical emergencies, and assist with mental health needs. In Australia, where hundreds of bushfires are raging across the country, Direct Relief is working with local organizations to deliver breathing masks. Founded in 1948, the organization responds to disasters worldwide, helping communities prepare beforehand and providing medical care and aid during and after the disaster.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
