Charity of the week
As businesses shut down to contain the global pandemic, many vulnerable Americans are left wondering how they will pay their next bills. Some organizations are stepping in to help people suddenly thrown out of work. The Actors Fund (actorsfund.org) set up an emergency pool to give financial assistance to those who work in film, TV, theater, and the other performing arts. In much of the country, restaurants have already been forced to close, devastating many workers who live paycheck to paycheck. For them, the Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation (restaurantworkerscf.org) has set up a crisis relief fund. New avenues of donation have also spring up, such as the website Leveler (www.leveler.info), where you can donate directly to unemployed gig workers.
Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their governance practices, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating. ■
