How to boost your immune system
Feed your microbiome. The bacteria that line your gut are allies in combating viruses, so feed them by eating a varied diet rich in fiber and fermented foods. “The more plant foods you consume, the better.” Your microbiome also loves kefir yogurts, kombucha, pickles, and sauerkraut.
Stay active. By getting blood flowing, exercise helps white blood cells patrol the body for foreign invaders. Activity also boosts immunity by reducing stress hormones.
Lay off the liquor. Don’t booze through the coronavirus crisis, “because heavy drinking depletes our immune cells.”
Skip supplements. It’s unclear if probiotic supplements boost the immune system. Vitamin D might help—it’s used by certain white blood cells. But extra vitamin C offers no edge, because the body won’t absorb it. “Eating your five-a-day fruits and vegetables is the best way to maintain necessary levels.”
