As con men target the unemployed, Americans should watch out for work-from-home schemes, secret-shopper "opportunities," and suspiciously large first paychecks

Con-men are targeting job seekers at a time when unemployment is at its highest rate since 1983.

With so many Americans unemployed, it's no surprise that unscrupulous scammers are trying to exploit their desperation. And thousands are taking the bait. Those concerned about being ensnared by a con should be vigilant, says jobs expert Jeff Taylor, quoted by CNBC. "Watch out for people requesting things out of the ordinary," like your mother's maiden name or social security number. "And no legitimate organization will ask for money up front in exchange for a job." Here, five of the most popular scams:
