Peacekeepers to begin leaving
The week's news at a glance.
Sarajevo, Bosnia
Germany and Britain said this week that they planned to pull their troops out of Bosnia within a few months. The two countries contribute about 900 soldiers in the 7,000-strong E.U. force that took over from NATO in 2004. Bosnian leaders welcomed the announcement. “The fact that the German government considers withdrawal of part of its troops from Bosnia shows that it tends to recognize that the situation in the country has significantly improved,” said Prime Minister Adnan Terzic. Others weren’t so upbeat. “Large-scale killings will likely not happen anymore,” said Franz Altmann of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs. “Politically, however, the situation in Bosnia is very unstable.” At least 100,000 people were killed in Bosnia’s 1992–1995 civil war.
