Cartoon offends

The week's news at a glance.

Copenhagen, Denmark

The Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten this week published a formal apology to the Muslim world for running cartoons portraying the Prophet Mohammed as a terrorist. The main Muslim group in Denmark accepted the apology, but Muslims abroad were not placated. Thousands of Palestinians marched in protest against the drawings, burning Danish flags. An Iraqi insurgent group called for attacks on Danes in Iraq, and several Arab countries announced a boycott of Danish products. Saudi Arabia has even recalled its ambassador from Denmark, while Libya closed its embassy there. The Arabs want the Danish government to officially apologize. But Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen says it’s not his place, since his government does not control the press.
