Regrettable photo ops
The week's news at a glance.
Washington, D.C.
Several photographs show President Bush with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, although Bush has said he doesn’t remember meeting him, Time and Washingtonian magazines reported this week. Time reporters said they had seen six photographs of Bush and Abramoff together at White House functions. Bush aides have acknowledged that Abramoff attended some “staff level” White House meetings, but they said photos do not prove that the two men knew each other. “The president has taken tens of thousands of pictures at such events,” said Dana Perino, a White House spokeswoman. Abramoff, who was declared a Bush “Pioneer” for raising $100,000 for the president’s re-election campaign, has pleaded guilty to federal bribery and other charges stemming from his lobbying practices.
