Biggest blast in months
The week's news at a glance.
Baghdad
A suicide bomber blew up a truck outside the U.S. military headquarters in Baghdad this week, killing at least 20 people and wounding more than 100, mostly Iraqis. No Americans were killed. “Suddenly, there was this bright light, and small pieces rained down from the sky,” said civil engineer Weesam Kadhum. “I didn’t want to stop running. I’ve only now realized that I don’t have blood or injuries on me.” It was the deadliest guerrilla attack since August, when a truck bomber struck the U.N. headquarters in Baghdad, leaving 23 dead. The new attack came just a day before U.S. and U.N. officials met to discuss the U.N.’s possible return to Iraq, and may have been intended to discourage the U.N. “Once again,” said U.S. administrator L. Paul Bremer, “it is innocent Iraqis who have been murdered by these terrorists in a senseless act of violence.”
