Basque terror
The week's news at a glance.
Alicante, Spain
Militants from the Basque separatist group ETA set off powerful bombs minutes apart in two Spanish resort hotels this week, injuring eight people. Casualties were light because an ETA spokesman warned police a few minutes ahead of time where and when the bombs would go off, and most people were evacuated. Four of the injured were police officers. ETA said earlier this summer that it intended to target tourist areas as part of its campaign to create an independent Basque homeland in northern Spain and southwest France. The group has killed more than 800 people over three decades of sporadic bombings and shootings.
