Former Yugoslavs vote for NATO
The week's news at a glance.
Ljubljana, Slovenia
Slovenia voted overwhelmingly this week to accept its invitations to NATO and the European Union. It is the first former Yugoslav republic to do so. The vote surprised pollsters, who had predicted defeat for at least the NATO measure because most Slovenes oppose the war in Iraq. The E.U. chose to interpret Slovenia’s vote as anti-war anyway. “In these times of war,” the E.U. Commission said in a statement, “such a commitment to the European project, which is devoted to peace, stability, and prosperity, has a special significance.”
