Syria's foreign minister Walid al-Moallem gave a speech Monday morning asking the U.S. not to launch unilateral airstrikes against ISIS in Syria without explicit consent from Damascus.

Al-Moallem said the airstrikes "would be considered an aggression" and a "violation of Syrian sovereignty," if they are conducted without consent, the Associated Press reports. He also said Syria will work with other nations to stop the Islamic militants.

The foreign minister's speech is the first public commentary from a senior official in Syria about ISIS' threat to the nation.
