Ten people accused of robbing Kim Kardashian in Paris are on trial in the French capital, nine years after the heist. The defendants face a range of charges, including armed robbery, membership of a criminal gang and kidnapping, and could "face up to 30 years in prison", said Vanity Fair.
What happened? Kardashian was in France for Paris Fashion Week in October 2016 when five men forced their way into her hotel room in the early hours of the morning. The gang held her at gunpoint and "bound her and duct-taped her mouth", said the magazine, in a "nightmare" that "lasted about 10 minutes" before they fled with jewellery worth more than $10 million, including a $4 million engagement ring from her then husband Kanye West.
The alleged robbers were picked up by police around three months later, but most of the stolen jewellery, including the engagement ring, have never been found.
Who are the accused? The gang were nicknamed the "grandpa robbers" after the heist was "attributed to a group of veteran criminals", including some who "are in their 70s", said The New York Times. Since the robbery, one of the suspects has died, and another, aged 81, has advanced dementia.
Only two of those on trial – 71-year-old Yunice Abbas and 68-year-old Aomar Ait Khedache – have admitted their involvement. The former has even released a book about the robbery called "I Kidnapped Kim Kardashian".
Why has the trial taken so long to begin? The Paris courts have been working through a "backlog" of other cases, including "large terrorism trials", that has taken many years to clear, said the BBC. In addition, the Kardashian heist suspects' "age and health issues" mean they have been seen as relatively low-risk and therefore less of a priority for the courts.
As they finally enter the dock, the trial looks set to attract a whirlwind of media coverage – especially when Kardashian takes the stand to give evidence in person on 13 May, when 400 journalists are expected to flock to the court. |
