Charity of the week: Children’s HeartLink

Children’s HeartLink helps communities in countries such as Brazil, China, South Africa, and Ukraine build treatment programs for children with heart defects.

Around the world, 1 million babies are born each year with congenital heart disease, and few of them have access to adequate care. In 1969, Children’s HeartLink (childrensheartlink.org) began bringing hundreds of sick children to the U.S. for lifesaving operations. Beginning in the 1990s, the organization shifted focus to help communities in countries such as Brazil, China, South Africa, and Ukraine build their own treatment programs for children with heart defects. Today, the organization sends world-class medical personnel to underserved communities to train local medical staff in pediatric cardiac care and to treat young patients. It also provides millions of dollars in funding and critical medical supplies to local hospitals.

Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which ranks not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fund-raising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest ranking.
