Tip of the week: How to save on winter gear
Here are places where you will find good deals on winter clothing.
Scour post-holiday sales. Throughout January, “boots, backpacks, and other outdoor gear” can be discounted “20 percent or more.” Some online retailers will go as far as offering “free-shipping promotions” to get rid of stock.
Shop big chains and outlet malls. Large retailers such as Dick’s Sporting Goods are offering the best deals. In 2007, the average price of a parka was $130 at a chain store compared with a specialty store’s marked-up price of $206.
Hit a ski swap. The sales events, usually held by ski resorts, feature booths run by stores “looking to unload new and used skis, snowboards, and other equipment.” Most retail equipment is marked “up to 80 percent” off. Find a directory of resorts on Goski.com.
