Zero tolerance for pencil-sharpener
A 10-year-old South Carolina boy has been suspended from school for possession of a broken pencil-sharpener. A teacher spotted the unnamed child wielding the sharpener’s detached blade, and though he was clearly trying to sharpen a pencil, the boy was suspended for two days under the school’s “zero-tolerance” weapons policy. School officials said they had “to make sure the child understands the seriousness of having something that could potentially harm another student.”

Dress code for female cyclists?
Hasidic Jews in Brooklyn, N.Y., are demanding that officials remove two bicycle paths that pass through their neighborhood because of the way some female cyclists dress. The ultraconservative sect objects to the trendy young women from adjoining neighborhoods who cycle past in bicycle shorts, tank tops, and other revealing clothing. “I have to admit, it’s a major issue,” said community board member Simon Weisser, “women passing through here in that dress code.”
