In Spain, 10 people have been gored to death by bulls this summer
So far this summer, at least 10 people have been killed after being gored by bulls during runs in Spain.
The most famous running of the bulls is held in Pamplona, but there are numerous events in the summer during annual fiestas, The Guardian reports. Over the past three days, four people have been gored to death: A 53-year-old spectator in Blanca, a 32-year-old in Museros, an 18-year-old in Lerín, and a 33-year-old in Peñafiel, who was running behind a bull when the animal turned around and charged at him multiple times. This isn't normal, bullfighting critic Antonio Lorca said. Lorca believes it's possible that because there aren't as many bullfights happening due to economic problems, more fighting bulls are used in the runs. "These are bulls with more power, more capacity to charge," he said.
Another major factor in the number of deaths could be social media — last week, a 32-year-old man was gored in the neck while filming a bull run on his phone in Villaseca de la Sagra, south of Madrid. "Bulls are dangerous animals and when there are a lot of people, some don't pay attention," Mayor Jesus Hijosa told AFP. "You have to have your wits about you."
