On Monday, British Prime Minister David Cameron announced that the country will have a new leader by "Wednesday evening," the BBC reports. Cameron had initially planned his resignation to be effective October, but after Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom, one of the Conservative Party's two finalists for the position, dropped out of the running Monday, Home Secretary Theresa May became the only remaining candidate for Conservative leader. Cameron's resignation was prompted by the country's historic Brexit vote last month.
May was officially named leader of the Conservative Party on Monday, and after Cameron resigns Wednesday she will become prime minister. May will be the second woman to fill the role, after Margaret Thatcher. Cameron has indicated that May will have his full support.
