Police turn backs on New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio at cop's funeral
Thousands of police and politicians from around the country turned out Saturday in New York for the funeral of NYPD officer Rafael Ramos, one of two officers ambushed and killed last weekend. Mourners packed several city blocks in Queens, New York, and some officers, reflecting a raw rift with City Hall, turned their backs on a videoscreen when Mayor Bill de Blasio delivered his eulogy.
Last week, police turned their backs on de Blasio when he strode through a hospital hours after a lone gunman killed Ramos and fellow officer Wenjian Liu. The city’s largest police union has been highly critical of the mayor following his remark, in the wake of the Eric Garner chokehold case, that police sometimes treat people differently because of the color of their skin. --Jon Terbush
